Overview:
Client: PTA
Location: Cockburn Central Car Park Upgrade Stage 1 & 2
Date: 2012
Urbanise WA undertook the detail design and documentation of the Stage 1 and 2 expansion of existing car park of Cockburn Station.
Stage 1 required a capacity upgrade, and the detail design and documentation of the stage 2 involved creating a new car park to the east side of Cockburn Station.
Stage 2 design also included the planning and design of the future Stage 3 expansion.
Scope:
- Design, documentation, and design engineer support under construction for:
- Demolition
- Earthworks & Site Works
- Stormwater Drainage
- Retaining Walls
- Pavement Structural Design
- Car park layout design
- Design amongst existing infrastructure.
Project Challenges:
Under Stage 1, the site area contained significant area and boundary constraints. An open filtration sump was required within the design and given area constraints could not be designed with sloping batters, and provide the capacity required.
The Stage 2 car park site was situated on a steep incline where a traditional drainage design would require imported fill to establish the drainage pipe network. Restrictive conditions also required that no subsurface storage be allowed.
Solutions:
For Stage 1 given the storage volume required, we investigated solutions and designed a sump to incorporate vertical limestone retaining walls, accommodating the drainage for the site and minimizing the loss of the proposed car bays.
For Stage 2, to reduce the construction cost of the site, the car park was graded evenly across the site with no gully pits and drainage pipe network.
Drainage was controlled through sheet flow into an open swale along the base of the car park incorporating stone pitching and grass mat to prevent erosion of the proposed swale.
Value Adding:
Urbanise WA has maintained a proven track record with the PTA with the timely and quality delivery of the parking upgrade.
Value adding has been achieved by Urbanise supplying the majority of the specialist skills in house including solutions for economically providing additional parking generation and stormwater storage solutions.
Urbanise provided ongoing support and management during the construction phase of the works giving consistency and confidence of performance, with smooth and quick transition from planning & design to construction.
